Its reputation and world-leading Li-ion cell technology derives from its research work in the 1960s into lithium materials resulting in patented Li-ion cathode technology in the late 1970s. The licensing of this technology enabled the business to build a strong foundation for further research and product development and for recruitment of staff with expertise in all areas of power system development.

Of its 140 employees, 30% are in design and development, 48% in manufacturing and 22% in support activities.

ABSL currently has its manufacturing base in Scotland - Thurso, Caithness; and offices and research laboratories in, Oxfordshire, England, where it also has a Space Products Division. In the US, ABSL has facilities in Colorado and Virginia.

Within the UK, ABSL is unique in being able to provide an impartial and informed evaluation of power technology alongside the capability to engineer core technologies into robust and high performance military hardware.
