BioFire Diagnostics, Inc. is a privately held biotechnology company based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Founded in 1990, BioFire Diagnostics licensed the rapid PCR technology from the University of Utah. RAZOR™ EX – Field Portable Biothreat Detection
Designed for CBRN units, the advanced RAZOR EX system employs Real-time PCR technology to deliver the most reliable and sensitive field BioThreat detection and identification of biological pathogens. Designed specifically for use in the field, the RAZOR EX’ compact and lightweight design allows it to be hand carried and minimal sample preparation requirements make it easy to use. It is powered by a lithium-ion battery or AC power and utilizes freeze-dried reagents which make RAZOR EX a complete field solution independent of any external power requirements. Used with The 10® Target Screen Kit, the RAZOR EX simultaneously tests ten pathogens with reliable DNA-based results available in less than 30 minutes. Created for first responders and front line military troops, it is easily operated while working in protective equipment under extreme conditions. The RAZOR EX utilizes Idaho BioFire Diagnostics patented reagent pouch system—integrated freeze-dried reagents packaged in durable plastic pouches for incomparable ease of use. A variety of pre-formatted pouch configurations are available for bioterrorism, food screening, or water testing applications.
The 10® - RAZOR System 10 Target Biothreat Screen Kit
Test an unknown white powder sample for 10 of the most dangerous bioterrorism agents such as Anthrax. Used with the RAZOR EX BioThreat Detection System, The 10 simultaneously tests an unknown sample for 10 Category A and B agents in 30 minutes. Reagents are freeze-dried and packaged in plastic, durable pouches which make The 10 a complete field solution. No refrigeration is required and the flexible pouch will not break from the stresses of field use.
The 10 tests for the following pathogens:
- Brucella spp
- Botulism A
- E. coli 0157
The 10 also contains a positive and a PCR-inhibition control that confirm the functionality of each test. The positive control, which contains a synthetic DNA segment, is hydrated with sample buffer and amplification of the positive control demonstrates that the system works properly. The PCR-inhibition control contains the same synthetic DNA segment as the positive control, but it is hydrated by the unknown sample. It serves to prevent false negative results by demonstrating PCR inhibition is not responsible for a negative result.

The multi-use FilmArray detects and identifies bioterrorism pathogens or diagnoses clinical conditions such as respiratory diseases. The laboratory-based FilmArray integrates advanced sample preparation with sensitive PCR technology within a compact, easy-to-use instrument. Minimal hands-on time or training is required to operate the FilmArray, just hydrate the assay pouch, inject the unknown sample, and load into the instrument.
