BioFire Diagnostics, Inc.:  Experts in BioThreat Detection and Biological Identification

Biological DetectionBioFire Diagnostics leads in the development of reliable and sensitive biodetection instruments. Known for its history of releasing innovative instruments, BioFire Diagnostics, Inc. produced the first ruggedized PCR-based instrument in 1999, the R.A.P.I.D., making possible lab quality results in the field. BioFire Diagnostics again revolutionized BioThreat Detection with the release of RAZOR EX, the first hand-held, ruggedized PCR-based detection system that delivers lab-quality results in the field.

About BioFire Diagnostics

BioFire Diagnostics, Inc. is a privately held biotechnology company based in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Founded in 1990, BioFire Diagnostics licensed the rapid PCR technology from the University of Utah. Through funds from the United States Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Defense, BioFire Diagnostics has leveraged this technology to create many innovative commercial instruments and reagents for use in research and applied fields. The R.A.P.I.D. was the first ruggedized, portable PCR instrument utilized for testing bioterrorism pathogens.  In 2003 BioFire Diagnostics was awarded the United States Military JBAIDS (Joint Biological Agent Identification and Diagnostic System) contract that utilizes a modified version of the R.A.P.I.D.  instrument. This was followed by a new generation biological detector, RAZOR, which is a compact, field-portable PCR instrument that operates on battery power and weighs 11 lbs.  Researchers, medical technicians, first responders, and CBRN soldiers in the field from all over the world use BioFire Diagnostic devices to detect or study disease-causing pathogens.  For further information about BioFire Diagnostics, please visit http://www.biofiredx.com

RAZOR™ EX – Field Portable Biothreat Detection

Field Portable Biothreat DetectionDesigned for CBRN units, the advanced RAZOR EX system employs Real-time PCR technology to deliver the most reliable and sensitive field BioThreat detection and identification of biological pathogens.  Designed specifically for use in the field, the RAZOR EX’ compact and lightweight design allows it to be hand carried and minimal sample preparation requirements make it easy to use.   It is powered by a lithium-ion battery or AC power and utilizes freeze-dried reagents which make RAZOR EX a complete field solution independent of any external power requirements.  Used with The 10® Target Screen Kit, the RAZOR EX simultaneously tests ten pathogens with reliable DNA-based results available in less than 30 minutes. Created for first responders and front line military troops, it is easily operated while working in protective equipment under extreme conditions. The ruggedized instrument includes Bluetooth® capabilities, bar code reader, and a bright, easy to read color screen.  To learn more about the RAZOR EX, please visit http://www.bio-surveillance.com/RAZOR.html

The RAZOR EX utilizes Idaho BioFire Diagnostics patented reagent pouch system—integrated freeze-dried reagents packaged in durable plastic pouches for incomparable ease of use.  A variety of pre-formatted pouch configurations are available for bioterrorism, food screening, or water testing applications.

The 10® - RAZOR System 10 Target Biothreat Screen Kit

Biothreat Screen KitTest an unknown white powder sample for 10 of the most dangerous bioterrorism agents such as Anthrax.  Used with the RAZOR EX BioThreat Detection System, The 10 simultaneously tests an unknown sample for 10 Category A and B agents in 30 minutes.  Reagents are freeze-dried and packaged in plastic, durable pouches which make The 10 a complete field solution. No refrigeration is required and the flexible pouch will not break from the stresses of field use.

The 10 tests for the following pathogens:

  • Anthrax
  • Brucella spp
  • Botulism A
  • Coxiella
  • E. coli 0157
  • Tularemia
  • Ricin
  • Salmonella
  • Smallpox
  • Plague

The 10 also contains a positive and a PCR-inhibition control that confirm the functionality of each test.  The positive control, which contains a synthetic DNA segment, is hydrated with sample buffer and amplification of the positive control demonstrates that the system works properly.  The PCR-inhibition control contains the same synthetic DNA segment as the positive control, but it is hydrated by the unknown sample.  It serves to prevent false negative results by demonstrating PCR inhibition is not responsible for a negative result.

The RAZOR EX BioThreat Detection System used with The 10 provides the most reliable and sensitive field BioThreat Detection capability that is easy to use.  To learn more, please visit http://www.bio-surveillance.com/RAZOR.html

Next Generation Biothreat DetectionNext Generation Biothreat Detection

-NEW- FilmArray BioThreat Detection System – More BioThreat targets processed in more sample matrices coupled with the capability for pandemic disease surveillance.  The multi-use FilmArray detects and identifies bioterrorism pathogens or diagnoses clinical conditions such as respiratory diseases.  The laboratory-based FilmArray integrates advanced sample preparation with sensitive PCR technology within a compact, easy-to-use instrument.  Minimal hands-on time or training is required to operate the FilmArray, just hydrate the assay pouch, inject the unknown sample, and load into the instrument.  The FilmArray automatically processes the sample, analyzes the data and provides positive / negative calls in 1 hour.  The BioThreat Pouch, used with the FilmArray, contains 25 assays covering Category A and B Bioterrorism pathogens.  Target pathogens contain multiple assays, each run in triplicate to provide high-confidence results.  For more information, please visit http://www.bio-surveillance.com/FilmArray.html

The CBRN Industry Standard For Biothreat Detection

R.A.P.I.D. (Ruggedized Advanced Pathogen Identification Device) pioneered BioThreat Detection as the first Real-time PCR instrument used in field operations.  This ruggedized instrument obtains reference lab quality results in a field setting.  It weighs 50 lbs, fits into a backpack, and utilizes freeze-dried reagents.  Because of its rugged design, reliability, and accuracy it has become the standard for the U.S. DoD and other militaries around the world.  For more information about R.A.P.I.D., please visit http://www.bio-surveillance.com/JBAIDS.html
