Celox - a revolutionary haemostatic agent

On Saturday 11th April, Edale Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) was called to Stanage Edge, a popular gritstone climbing venue in Derbyshire Peak District. A 25 year old climber had fallen around 8m while abseiling.

The climber sustained very serious pelvic injuries which resulted in substantial, life threatening bleeding. Edale MRT members had been fundraising nearby and were able to reach the scene quickly. To control the bleeding, they used Celox™, a revolutionary new haemostatic agent, which they have adopted in the last few weeks. Celox™ helped stabilise the climber along with pain relieving morphine, oxygen and intravenous fluids, until he was evacuated to the top of the crag and then taken to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital. He is now in hospital in a stable condition following emergency surgery on his pelvis and wrist.

It is believed that this is the first time Celox™ has been used by Mountain Rescue in the UK, and helped the Edale Mountain Rescue Team, East Midlands Ambulance Service and local Air Ambulance in their work to undoubtedly save his life.
