INNOVATIVE LAND DEFENCE COATINGS

The Intergard® 10.000 series of coatings for land-based military equipment was developed by AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings in joint collaboration projects with defense industries and government organizations around the world and has been widely taken up by the international defense communities since its launch almost three years ago.

“AkzoNobel had supplied high specification land defense coatings for many years,” explained Rob Walker, AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings’ Business Development Manager for the defense sector. “Changes in international legislation and environmental policies led to the launch of the Intergard® low solvent range of long life coatings, some of which are derived from products we developed for use within the technologically innovative aerospace sector. This has to be one of the toughest environments coatings are exposed to, so it was an ideal starting point for developing systems that need to withstand battlefield conditions. ”

The entire Intergard® 10.000 series offers customers new levels of protection, including camouflage and asset preservation, with the added benefits of extended maintenance intervals and other cost efficiency improvements.

As well as providing the highest levels of corrosion protection for the tough and demanding defense environment, the Intergard® series includes coatings developed to provide additional benefits specific to military use. For example, there is a full suite of reflective products from NIR (Near Infrared), through the color spectrum. The rage includes high solids Intergard® 10208 and water based Intergard® 10212 CARC (Chemical Agent Resistant Coatings), which has an ultra low VOC level and requires minimum levels of solvent in the cleaning process. Waste management is also reduced as a chemical flocculating material removes solids from the waste water, allowing the water to be re-processed and used again.

One of the most innovative Intergard® products is a peelable waterborne camouflage coating, Intergard® 10220. Because Intergard® 10220 is only temporary, and has a VOC of less than 30g per liter, it does not have the traditional environmental implications associated with solvent based temporary systems. It can also be removed by peeling or by pressurized water, rather than with special strippers and cleaning agents, reducing the high costs usually associated with the disposal of temporary paint coatings.

AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings products and services carry independent certifications such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and AS 9100 as well as approvals to various Defense Standards and have received CARC certification from independent test houses.

The company’s service covers in-house and on-site training in coating products, technologies and application techniques. There is also a full technical specification and support service.
