September is secured in many minds because of the 9/11 atrocities and the huge loss of life across many walks of life that were inflicted.

Aviation was central to the terrorists’ ambition that day, so perhaps it’s fitting that we introduce our first equipment focus by looking at portable intruder detection that can and is being deployed to secure aircraft, both civil and military, while on the ground.

The Sentor is a proven and reliable standalone system currently in use by airport authorities and police to secure aircraft on the apron. Two units are sufficient to render helicopters, light aircraft, fighters or transporters perimeter-tight.

But at just 127cm high, it’s portable enough to be deployed virtually anywhere, from the battlefield to the boardroom (and increasingly on construction sites to protect valuable plant and materials) and can be integrated with your current security to activate hard-wired systems, lighting and CCTV.

Here are some key features:

• Twin passive infrared detection heads giving 40m range per head;
• All-weather system with hooded window limits the effects of direct sunlight;
• User-set voice messages are transmitted via VHF, UHF or GSM to the guard or control room, instantly warning of an intrusion.

There’s a wealth of sophisticated perimeter detection equipment available to you today but you’ll have to be prepared to pay the price for it. Do you need to stretch that far for what may end up being a temporary application, when worthy alternatives are to hand.

AutoGuard – precise, expandable, applicable everywhere.

This portable intruder detector is the kit for all reasons and seasons – fit it on houses, office buildings, construction sites, fenceposts or trees.

AutoGuard will protect event venues such as hotels and conference centres overnight or when unmanned and you can fully integrate it into a wider security network activating external alarms or CCTV surveillance, vibration sensors and door contacts, like Sentor, dialling out to programmed numbers when triggered.

You can build up AutoGuard to include up to 64 additional detector heads and its stablemate StealthGuard, which we discuss below.

Key features:

• Thirty metre detector range in a straight line;
• Comes with light, durable, waterproof casing;
• The IP66 rated detector heads can be used inside or out.

StealthGuard

This specialist version of AutoGuard is a high end specialist covert system used by bodyguards, patrols or military personnel and delivers ultimate protection in any environment, being quickly deployed from a briefcase or body-worn ammunition-style pouches.

The eight sturdy, palm-sized passive infrared detectors that come with the basic system can be positioned virtually anywhere using the universal fixings and are controlled by the hand-held monitor which alert the patrol or guard to the exact position of penetration of the covered zones.

The active alarmed zone each detector covers is 30m in a straight line and from ground level up to the height of the detector head and a width of 3m at the 30m detector range.

Key features:

• Thirty metre detection range in a straight line;
• Audio alarm can also delivered through an earpiece.
