Kromek in Poland 2025
With rising geopolitical tensions and increasing instability on the borders of Europe, Poland is now a major contributor to European – and NATO – defence and CBRN capability. One of the greatest challenges Europe and the alliance faces, particularly given the ongoing war in Ukraine, is the risk of a deliberate or accidental radiological incident.
As a Kromek priority market, the recently appointed Strategy and Commercial Director Michael Stephenson has been cementing and strengthening links with one of Kromek’s in-country distributors, IBKOL. Michael joined IBKOL at the annual CBRNe Convergence conference in Poznan from 24-26th June. This year the conference had a focus on high-intensity CBRN, concentrating on a range of scenarios from hybrid warfare to large-scale combat operations. This was a chance for Kromek to liaise with industry and civil-military experts from Poland, Europe, the United States of America and the wider world on the current escalating CBRN threats. CBRNe Convergence was also an opportunity to meet and strengthen relations with representatives from multiple international Fire and Rescue Services, some of which Kromek already supports directly and others by virtue of its place on the UK’s Detection, Identification, and Monitoring (DIMS) Fire and Rescue Service's National Resilience capabilities framework. This framework focuses on the ability to assess potential CBRN threats, ensuring a more effective response to major incidents.
On June 27th, IBKOL, with Michael, attended the POLON CBRNE workshop, where participants could explore advanced technologies for identifying and neutralising CBRNE threats, protecting critical infrastructure, and innovative solutions. The D5 RIID was on show, which is Kromek’s most robust hand-held radioisotope detector. It has a small form-factor, powerful radiometric performance, an expansive built-in isotope library, and enhanced sensitivity, coupled with network-enabled reach-back to a control centre.
Reflecting on his time in Poland, Michael said: “The last month has been an excellent opportunity to strengthen our links to Poland. Through our distributor IBKOL, we have been able to demonstrate our innovative detectors to a wide range of existing and potential users. We are looking forward to returning to Poland in early September when we exhibit our family of detectors at the MSPO exhibition, an event which is gaining traction and global relevance as the international security situation becomes more precarious.”
